Nepal to observe UN Vesak Day next year: PM

Kathmandu, May 18 : Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Saturday said Nepal would celebrate the United Nations Day of Vesak next year. 

Buddhist followers and leaders participating in the International Day of Vesak in Vietnam and Cambodia have been requested to attend the Vesak Day to be celebrated in Lumbini next year, the PM shared at a programme organised at Anandakuti Vihar on the occasion of the 2563rd Birth Anniversary of Gautam Buddha. 

On December 15, 1999, the UN General Assembly recognised and acknowledged the celebration of the Day of Vesak which includes commemoration of three days, the birth of the Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment and his passing away. The day is called the UN Day of Vesak Celebration. "Lord Buddha was such a personality, who has lightened up the world through his enlightenment 2500 years ago," said PM Oli. 

On the occasion, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Nepal WS Perera said Buddha's teachings are relevant and important even today. Stating that the bilateral friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Nepal was established in 1957, the Ambassador believed that establishment of Buddhist pilgrimages would help further strengthen relations between both the countries.

Likewise, vice chairperson of the Buddha Jayanti Celebration Committee Bhikkhu Kaudanya Mahasthabir offered his wishes for the success of the government observing the Vesak Day next year. He also recalled PM Oli's recent official visit to Vietnam and Cambodia of which he was a part.(RSS)
