Sakela observed in Tundikhel

Kathmandu, May 25 : Sakela, the festival of Kirant Community (Rai, Limbu, Yakkha, Sunuwar), has been observed in various places in the country with much fanfare today.

The cultural festival also has been celebrated in Tundikhel in the capital on Saturday with much fanfare. Peoples from various walk of Kirant community clad in traditional attire and observed the festival by playing different musical instruments exchanging greetings with each other. The festival also known as Udhauli began on the full moon day of Baisakh Sakela Ubhauli-5079 today has been marked organizing various programmes including dances and other performances. 

It is believed that the festival was celebrated since the beginning of human civilization by worshiping land, ancestors hoping of getting better crops, better health and better livelihood.

According to cultural experts in Kirant community, the festival is observed twice in the year – during plantation and harvesting period. The Kirant Rai Yayokha chair and chief guest of the programme organized in Tundikhel Bibas Rai urged the government to preserve the festival as it was the cultural ornament of the country.(RSS)
